Time and Seasons

Why English Learners Need More Than Just a Calendar

Understanding time and seasons isn’t just about knowing the difference between summer and winter or memorizing the days of the week—it’s about navigating real life. Time shapes everything from routines and schedules to social events, shopping habits, work shifts, and even moods. For language learners, confidently using time-related vocabulary and seasonal references can make the difference between blending in and standing out awkwardly.

When students understand how to talk about the seasons, they can participate more naturally in conversations. Small talk often starts with comments about the weather or the time of year. ‘Can you believe how early it gets dark now?’ or ‘I can’t wait for spring!’—these are phrases that come up daily. If students don’t know how to respond, they miss a chance to connect. On the other hand, when they can respond naturally, they’re not just practicing English—they’re building relationships.

Seasons also influence what we wear, eat, and do. A student who doesn’t understand what ‘layer up’ means in winter or what a ‘summer break’ involves might feel left out of social cues and cultural rhythms. The same goes for time vocabulary—words like ‘midday,’ ‘sunrise,’ or ‘quarter to five’ are essential for daily life, whether that’s arriving to work on time, reading a bus schedule, or planning a weekend trip. Time also plays a key role in cooking, appointments, school timetables, and online meetings. If students don’t have solid time-related language, they’ll struggle with basic, functional tasks.

Learning how to talk about time and seasons is also key for developing storytelling and writing skills. Being able to describe what happens ‘every morning’ or ‘last autumn’ helps students build clearer, more expressive sentences. It supports tense development and gives them a way to structure their ideas around real-life experience.

If you want to help students feel more grounded in English, time and seasons is one of the most practical topics you can teach. And visuals make all the difference. Add these images to your lesson library and watch your students light up with recognition as they connect new vocabulary to everyday moments.
